Ahead of Monsoon Season, LG Delhi visits Khan Market, Inspects Ongoing Improvement And Development Works

Lt. Governor Delhi, Sardar Taranjit Singh Sandhu, visited Khan Market to take stock of the on-going developmental works and also met with local shopkeepers and visitors to the market. New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC), Chairman,Keshav Chandra and Vice Chairperson,Kuljeet Singh Chahal were also present along with other senior officers during the visit.LG inspected the ongoing improvement / development works and took a briefing on the project’s progress and implementation timelines from the Chairperson, NDMC and senior engineering officials.

During the visit, the Lieutenant Governor discussed issues related to the modernisation of the area and the improvement of civic amenities. He stated that efforts are underway to develop Khan Market into a prominent and well-organised international destination, in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's global vision. He further remarked that an environment should be created in Khan Market that offers visitors a fresh experience and clearly reflects the progress being made.He emphasized that ensuring highest standards of urban infrastructure remains a key priority. Upgrading such iconic public and commercial spaces by enhancing civic amenities, improving traffic and pedestrian management, as also providing a seamless experience for visitors, tourists, and local businesses alike, were essential,LG underlined.

LG directed the concerned departments to expedite the remaining development works while ensuring strict adherence to quality and safety benchmarks. He further said that "We remain committed to transforming Delhi’s urban landscape into a modern, sustainable, and world-class civic environment. has also reviewed the implementation of the Modular Rain Water Harvesting System at Satya Marg, New Delhi under NDMC jurisdiction and took a briefing from the Chairperson, NDMC on the system’s design, operational efficiency, and long-term sustainability features, while also interacting with NDMC officers overseeing on-ground execution.

On the occasion, he stated that strengthening and decentralising water conservation infrastructure remains essential for building a climate-resilient and environmentally sustainable capital. Such modular rainwater harvesting systems are instrumental in enhancing groundwater recharge, mitigating localised waterlogging, and promoting efficient urban water management across Delhi.With the monsoon approaching, he emphasised the need to accelerate the adoption and expansion of such eco-friendly and sustainable infrastructure solutions across the city. He also stated that "we remain firmly committed to advancing green urban development and securing Delhi’s environmental future through innovative and resilient civic infrastructure."

Chairman, NDMC, Keshav Chandra informed Hon’ble LG, that work on 290 out of its 340 existing and planned rainwater harvesting structures has been completed, making them clean and operational. The remaining 50 pits, including 28 modular systems and 22 conventional structures, are being cleaned on a fast-track basis and are expected to be completed by June 2026. He also highlighted that NDMC has constructed 61 modular rainwater harvesting pits during 2025-26, each with a storage capacity of 30 kilolitres. On the occasion,Chahal said that, aligned with the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji for Viksit Bharat @2047 and under the guidance of Lieutenant Governor Sardar Taranjit Singh Sandhu ji, NDMC is committed to building a cleaner, greener, smarter, and world-class New Delhi. He said that Khan Market is one of the most prominent and iconic commercial destinations in the national capital, attracting visitors from across India and abroad. NDMC is continuously focusing on the comprehensive redevelopment and upgradation of the market to enhance its infrastructure, improve accessibility, and provide a seamless experience for visitors, shoppers, and local businesses.

Chahal further said, "We are regularly reviewing and monitoring the progress of the ongoing works through frequent site visits to ensure timely completion while maintaining the highest standards of quality and safety. To further strengthen cleanliness and sanitation in the area, NDMC has also implemented dedicated night sweeping operations at Khan Market to ensure a clean and hygienic environment for visitors every day." He added that the redevelopment of Khan Market and the expansion of modular rainwater harvesting systems reflect NDMC's focus on enhancing civic amenities, strengthening environmental sustainability, and building a climate-resilient capital in line with the vision of Viksit Bharat @2047.
