Furthering the visionary call of Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi Ji’s ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ initiative, Bhartiya Janta Party National President Nitin Nabin planted a 'Peepal' sapling at the plantation programme organized by the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) at Nehru Park, Chanakyapuri, New Delhi on the occasion of World Environment Day, conveying a message of environmental conservation, respect for mothers, and people-led green development.The programme was attended by Delhi BJP President Harsh Malhotra, Minister in the Government of Delhi Parvesh Verma, Member of Parliament from New Delhi Ms. Bansuri Swaraj, NDMC Chairman Keshav Chandra, NDMC Vice-Chairman Kuljeet Singh Chahal, Council Members Smt. Sarita Tomar, Dinesh Pratap Singh, Secretary NDMC Rahul Singh along with HODs of NDMC concerned and several distinguished guests. They also planted saplings in the name of their mothers and pledged to contribute towards environmental conservation by planting more trees.

On the occasion, Nitin Nabin felicitated various “Paryavaran Praharis” (Environmental Guardians) who have made significant contributions towards environmental conservation in the NDMC area. These included representatives of Market Traders Associations, Resident Welfare Associations, residents, gardeners, and officials actively engaged in the care and maintenance of plants. He also interacted with employees of the Horticulture department, previous participants of the campaign, listened to their experiences, and thanked them for their contribution towards environmental protection. Speaking to the media after participating in the plantation drive at Nehru Park, Shri Nitin Nabin said that under the inspiring leadership and visionary call of Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji, the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign has today evolved into a nationwide people’s movement. The campaign has not only created awareness about environmental conservation but has also established a deep emotional connection among citizens. Across the country, people are planting trees in honour of their mothers, preserving their memories while contributing to environmental protection.

He appealed to the people of India to further strengthen the campaign, stating that if we wish to leave a cleaner, greener, and healthier environment for future generations, we must actively participate in tree plantation and the protection of planted saplings. Through such efforts, we can fulfil our responsibility towards nature and contribute to the sustainable development of the nation.On this occasion, Kuljeet Singh Chahal said that today also marks the second anniversary of the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign.Prime Minister Narendra Modi Ji launched this unique and emotional mass movement on World Environment Day, June 5, 2024. By linking environmental conservation with respect for mothers, the initiative has, over the past two years, transformed into a nationwide people’s movement. The campaign inspires citizens to plant a tree in honour of their mothers and take responsibility for its care, thereby giving renewed momentum to both environmental protection and public participation.

Chahal said that this is not merely a plantation drive but a symbol of our emotional and social commitment towards nature and motherhood. NDMC is continuously carrying forward this campaign, organising regular plantation drives every Sunday as well as on other occasions throughout the year.Expressing gratitude to all dignitaries and citizens present at the programme, Shri Chahal expressed confidence that with active public participation, NDMC will continue to achieve new milestones in creating a clean, green, and sustainable urban environment.

Chahal further stated that the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) is one of the country’s most prestigious urban local bodies, serving an area of approximately 42.74 square kilometres. NDMC is actively engaged in providing civic services, promoting green development, maintaining cleanliness and beautification, delivering water and electricity services, and advancing sustainable urban development. The Council remains committed to making its area cleaner, greener, environmentally friendly, and citizen-centric.

He proudly highlighted that although the NDMC area constitutes only about 3% of Delhi’s total geographical area, nearly 55% of the NDMC area is covered by green spaces. NDMC manages approximately 1,450 acres of green area, including prominent parks such as Nehru Park, Lodhi Garden, and Sanjay Lake.Officers and staff of NDMC’s Horticulture and Sanitation Departments actively participated in the programme. The enthusiastic participation of women, youth, and local residents added further strength to the campaign, reinforcing its character as a true people’s movement.
