Exclusive: Cabinet Secretary T.V. Somanathan Not Keen On Extension?

In a development that has set the corridors of power abuzz, Cabinet Secretary T.V. Somanathan is learnt to be unwilling to accept an extension to his tenure, which is set to conclude next month in August.  Top sources said that Somanathan has quietly signalled his intent to step down rather than seek a continuation  It is something rare at this position where extensions are almost a norm for incumbents.

Not Ready For Extension

The reasons remain shrouded in ambiguity, but top sources point to two possible reasons  First, Somanathan, who has witnessed governance at its most granular, is said to feel that he has experienced the "core of the system" and believes the time is right to pass on the baton  Second, he may be being prepared for a significant assignment and perhaps outside the bureaucracy, making his resistance to an extension a calculated, deliberate move.

Top sources said that while Cabinet Secretaries have historically accepted extensions when offered by the government, the consensus among top sources is clear: if Somanathan has made up his mind, there are sound reasons behind it.

Beyond Conventional Cabinet Secretary

What makes Somanathan's tenure stand out is how decisively he moved beyond the traditional, file-pushing role associated with the Cabinet Secretary's office.  Top sources said that rather than operating as a passive coordinator between ministries, he adopted a distinctly interventionist style, one that actively sought to identify and fix governance gaps before they snowballed.

His tenure was marked by periodic working style and governance advisories issued directly to Secretaries across departments, nudging officials to sharpen administrative efficiency, accelerate decision-making, and cut through bureaucratic inertia.   Somanathan took charge as Cabinet Secretary on August 30, 2024, succeeding Rajiv Gauba, for a fixed two-year term,m a tenure that concludes at the end of next month.
