Exclusive: Delhi Chief Secretary Rajiv Verma Prepares To Clean Up Mess In Delhi Government

With red tape choking Delhi's bureaucratic corridors and accident numbers refusing to dip, the Capital's top administrative officer is done waiting. Chief Secretary Rajiv Verma is gearing up for what top sources describe as a sweeping clean-up operation, a top source said.

The Mess

Sources close to the development confirm that Verma has zeroed in on four departments identified as both critical to Delhi's economy and alarmingly reeling from slow administrative functioning and disarray: the Excise Department, DISSIDC, GST, and the Fire Department. These are not peripheral wings of the government; they form what top sources call "Delhi's economic bedrock." Yet, top sources say, structural mess and years of maladministration have left them riddled with loopholes, sluggish delivery, and festering inefficiency.

Chief Secretary Action

The Chief Secretary is said to have taken an exceptionally serious view of the rot within these departments. According to top sources, the Chief Secretary has planned to make hard calls, senior Officers currently posted in these departments are under the scanner, with transfers and administrative action against them being actively considered. Systemic overhauls aimed at plugging institutional loopholes that have enabled maladministration to thrive.  "The Chief Secretary has made it clear performance is non-negotiable and redtapism and bureaucratic inertia, specifically these departments, are non-tolerable", a top source added.

Top sources add that Chief Secretary Rajiv Verma has already forwarded his recommendations, including proposed administrative actions, to the Lieutenant Governor for final approval. The LG's nod is now the final step before the clean-up operation moves from paper to action.
