Exclusive: Home Secretary Govind Mohan Likely to Miss Extension, Eyed for Top CVC Post
In a major development, top government sources indicate that Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan is unlikely to get an extension in his current post, paving the way for a fresh appointment at the bureaucratic helm of the Home Ministry.
Top Sources suggest Mohan is being lined up for an even bigger assignment: Chief of the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC). A selection committee meeting, chaired by the Prime Minister, is expected to convene soon to finalise the decision. The move, insiders say, fits into a broader government strategy to restore institutional stability at the CVC- an anti-corruption watchdog that has grappled with leadership churn at the top for some time. By bringing in what sources describe as "a hard task master," the government is signalling intent to sharpen the Commission's effectiveness and reassert its institutional weight.
Race For Next Home Secretary
With Mohan potentially moving on, according to sources, the race has narrowed to two IAS officers from the 1992 batch: First, Ashish Bhutani – currently Secretary, Department of Cooperation and trailing him is Pankaj Aggarwal – currently Union Power Secretary. Sources add that a change at the top is now widely expected, and a final call by ACC is expected in the coming weeks.
