Akhilesh Yadav's Gen-Z Outreach Ahead of UP Elections

Akhilesh Yadav's Gen-Z Outreach Ahead of UP Elections

The Bahujan Samaj Party has been experiencing a steady decline in its voter base, largely attributed to the relative political inactivity of its leadership. A source notes that the party’s vote share dropped to 19.3% in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, fell to 13.88% in the 2022 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, and hit a low of approximately 9% in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. A political source indicates that Samajwadi Party Chief Akhilesh Yadav aims to capitalize on this decline to fill the political vacuum. His goal is to consolidate the support of Dalits and Other Backward Classes (OBCs), voters who have traditionally identified with the BSP’s iconic blue flag rather than the SP's traditional red and green.

As part of this effort, a source notes that Yadav intends to position himself at the forefront of the youth segment formerly aligned with the BSP. To visually symbolize this alignment and connect with younger voters, the Samajwadi Party introduced a new dress code for its student wing, the SAMAJWADI CHHATRA SABHA. Members will now wear blue T-shirts paired with blue jeans, alongside the traditional red cap. According to a source, this move incorporates the color blue, traditionally associated with Dalit politics, Dr B.R. Ambedkar, and the Indian Constitution, into SP’s youth outreach. To further build momentum, a source says the SP is planning a major 'Dalit Sammelan' in Agra, a key region with a dense Dalit demographic.

These maneuvers signal a strategic expansion beyond the SP’s conventional 'Muslim-Yadav' alliance or the broader 'PDA' (Pichhda, Dalit, Alpsankhyak) platform. According to a source, Akhilesh Yadav is making deliberate inroads among diverse OBC sub-castes, such as Kurmi, Shakya, Maurya, and Naushad, while simultaneously wooing forward communities, including Brahmins. At the same time, a source notes that Yadav is exercising caution to avoid alienating Rajput voters.

Consequently, he avoids launching direct personal criticisms against Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who belongs to the Rajput community. Instead, in his public speeches and political commentary, Yadav focuses his sharpest criticism on the Bharatiya Janata Party, the Prime Minister, and the central government. A source suggests that Yadav operates under the assessment that UP voters harbor stronger dissatisfaction with the central leadership and its policies than with the state administration.
