Assembly Elections of UP and Punjab Likely To Be Postponed?
The BJP is in very high spirits after the recently concluded assembly elections. Some leaders in the party want to capitalise on the enthusiasm of the party workers and the atmosphere in the states, which is blowing in their favour, a source says. Sunil Bansal has already been silently given responsibility for UP, and sources say he has already started his work at the booth level. Preparations for the panchayat elections in UP are underway. Administrators now head the panchayats because the Pradhans' terms ended on 26th May.
The elections for the 403 assembly seats in UP are due in Feb-March 2027. Still, taking shelter in the preparations for the panchayat elections and the victories in the states, the group supporting the preponement of elections is very optimistic and feels that, in the present atmosphere, the small parties are not likely to raise their heads for more seats. The BJP is likely to contest on its own in the maximum number of seats, according to a source. Moreover, it’s said that it's likely that Akhilesh Yadav will start his yatra in August, and the preponement is likely to puncture hopes, a SP source says. But another group in the party is opposed to this idea, citing price rise, paper leaks, and feels that this is likely to go against the party and the elections must be conducted as scheduled because by that time the crops must have gone inside the godowns and the farmers having money in their pockets must be in good moods and will listen to the party's achievparty's, etc.
Likewise, the party leaders want to postpone the elections for 117 seats of the Punjab assembly. Probably after getting some hint, Kejriwal, in a closed-door meeting of senior party leaders and some workers, asked them to get ready for the elections, the source says. The UP and Punjab elections are crucial because in UP, the party wants to retain power, which is essential for the parliamentary elections of 2029 and regain power in Punjab, the source says.
