BJP Keeping Close Eye On RSS?

BJP Keeping Close Eye On RSS?

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is keeping an extraordinarily close eye on the ongoing international tour of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) Sarsanghchalak Mohan Bhagwat across the USA and Canada, a source says. This overseas visit carries profound strategic significance not only for the RSS, which is marking its landmark centenary year, but also for the ruling party at home, the source adds. The top brass of the BJP is anxiously monitoring Bhagwat’s public discourses, keynotes, and with the diaspora.

Party leaders are eager to decipher the RSS leadership's underlying ideological direction, as any subtle shift or policy hint could force the party to adjust or amend its political strategies to balance ideological purity with the pragmatic demands of governance, a source says. Beyond his public addresses, the BJP leadership is particularly keen to track his schedule of private meetings and the exact nature of discussions taking place behind closed doors, a source says. This heightened vigil stems directly from past fallout from a past international tour by senior RSS functionaries, including Dattatreya Hosabale and Ram Madhav, the source says.

During this visit, reports emerged that the RSS leaders advocated for an immediate resumption of bilateral dialogue between India and Pakistan, a stance that directly contradicted the official line of the BJP and the Union government, which holds that cross-border terrorism and peace negotiations cannot go hand in hand, a source says.

That ideological mismatch forced the government into an awkward position, compelling the party leadership to scramble and initiate delicate damage control measures to align public narratives, a source says. The stakes are even higher with the RSS chief himself on tour, especially given the backdrop of critical upcoming state assembly elections, a source says. Foreign policy positions, particularly regarding national security and relations with neighboring countries, remain deeply emotional touchpoints for the electorate, the source says.

If Bhagwat articulates positions that diverge from the official government stance, managing the political fallout during an active election cycle would prove immensely difficult for the BJP, a source says. Adding to the complexity, Bhagwat's international outreach, highlighted by high-profile engagements such as the universal oneness celebrations in New York, comes amid complex geopolitical dynamics and heightened scrutiny from international advocacy groups, a source says.

The ruling party remains acutely aware that any major statement made abroad could echo strongly back home, potentially creating friction between the ideological parent organization and its political wing right when political unity is needed most, a source says.
