Homecoming of Capt Amarinder Singh?
Capt Amarinder Singh's homecoming to the Congress is not imminent. The former Chief Minister recently joined the BJP but reportedly feels constrained and discontent within the party, according to sources close to him. BJP had initially taken him on the expectation that his popularity across Punjab would bolster the party's standing in the state. However, sources indicate that little has changed since his entry, and the party remains as it was before, with internal disagreements persisting. Notably, Singh opposed the appointment of Kewal Singh Dhillon as the new state BJP chief, further illustrating internal tensions.
Singh was a Congress member until June 4, 2022, and had represented Barnala in the 2012 assembly elections on a Congress ticket. Recent statements by Hooda of Haryana, suggesting that Capt is in regular contact with the Congress, have caused confusion in political circles. Later, Singh also said that no BJP leaders had offered condolences or contacted him after his brother’s death, except Rahul Gandhi, who had individually called him, adding complexity to the situation. Some insiders believe Singh's potential return to Congress was planned three to four months ago, but the ED's summons to him delayed the move. While the BJP recognises that Singh's presence in the party does not significantly impact its prospects, many view his return to Congress as a move that would strengthen the party’s grassroots base and overall influence in Punjab, a source says.
