Women Reservation Bill Likely To Backfire?
With lots of fanfare and suspense on the agenda for the special session of parliament, lately, the bill was included in the agenda and also with the support of opposition parties, the bill was passed by the Lower House source says. The opposition parties supported the bill but wanted to have the OBC quota reserved within this 33% women’s reservation source says. The government aggressively negated the demand quoting that this is a move to divide society politically source says. Uma Bharti, the ex-central minister and ex-CM of MP also raised her voice on OBC reservation source says. After some days MPs from the BJP also started raising the issue and BJP leadership is maintaining calculated silence on the issue source says. BJP was sure to have support of Women in coming state and parliamentary elections but as highlighted by opposition leaders the bill though passed by parliament will not be operative till the census is done source says. This has given a chance to opposition leaders to say that this act is not new but similar to remittances of black money and shares deposited in individual accounts, two crore employment every year, double the income of farmers and putting all corrupt leaders behind bar source says. The illusion of reservation to women is only to get benefits in the elections source says. BJP was sure to get OBC votes last year in the coming elections in the Hindi belt to form state and central government but the exposure of the plan and opposition of even party women members of parliament for reservation of OBC in the women’s quota likely to backfire source says.
