After Doval Who?: An Interesting Reckoning In the Halls of Power

Reports are doing rounds of Ajit Doval expressing his unwillingness to continue if the government wins the third term. This has triggered an interesting discussion in power corridors. The role of the National Security Advisor is crucial and irrespective of reports and rumours, top sources say that Doval could continue for one more term as currently, at both level strategic and political, Doval's presence is still required for a more enhanced and valuable addition to the decision-making process in complicated global politics landscape where India is progressing on the path of strategic rise.

However, if Doval chooses to step down, the question of 'after Doval, who?' becomes the new debate in the power corridors. According to top sources, if Doval's unwillingness is accepted by the Prime Minister, a panel with Doval's opinion will likely be considered. It's important to note that the expected credentials for the National Security Advisor include expertise in security and strategic affairs, which involve both tradecraft and diplomatic tact. Sources suggest that the former R&AW chief, Samant Goel, is a strong contender, followed by Praveen Sinha, who has experience in Interpol and is currently handling National Security Council Affairs, and Deputy NSA Vikram Mishri, a China specialist.  The post was historically dominated by IPS officers, but in the previous government, IFS officers held the position, so a mixed panel of IPS and IFS officers may be considered.

These three names are considered preferable as all three have the capability to excel in strategic and security fields. Samant Goel, a former R&AW chief, is a well-known figure and is highly preferred for the top job. Vikram Misri and Praveen Sinha, too, have merits. They possess efficient negotiation skills and have hands-on experience in fostering international cooperation, which are crucial aspects of the National Security Advisor's role.
