Man With Big Stick
The 'Big Stick' approach, famously used by former US President Roosevelt, is A strategy that advocates for peaceful negotiation but also emphasizes the need for strength in case of adversity. This approach, now being implemented in the MCD under the leadership of Ashwini Kumar, is not just a choice but a necessity for the institutional revival, particularly in the MCD. After Gyanesh Bharti's long tenure as MCD Commissioner, MCD got a new boss a few weeks back. This change was anticipated, but MCD appears to be quite dynamic at the institutional level. According to top sources, it has been learned that MCD had been running from what can be called as "institutional cracks", which led to rampant corruption at various departments, especially at the engineer level. Sources add that "things in MCD were happening at its whims and fancies of mid-low ranking officers, who had shaken up MCD from the inside. Matters worsened when the normal public suffered from the spillovers of these whims and fancies. Sources add that "there was much-needed deterrence from the top, which only Ashwini can deliver". Surprisingly, this Big Stick approach worked after a few days; sources say that a suspicious deal in the engineering department was called off after Ashwini began to set the house in order. The bureaucratic critics and a few experts have termed Kumar and Kumar as controlling the bureaucratic ecosystem of the Delhi Government and have been politically mired for apparent reasons. Still, an obvious question arises: who is responsible for spineless administration? And why can't we have strong-spined administrators to set the house in order? Ultimately, we need to keep politics aside because an administrator is not "only" known for their continuous rise, but history remembers how efficient they were and how they delivered to the public.
