MHA Reiterates Central Deputation Shortage: Why Centre Has Become A Selective Game For IPS Officers

The Ministry of Home Affairs has reiterated sending sufficient IPS officers to the Centre to fill SP to IG-level posts in various CAPF and central agencies. Interestingly, this reminder was sent to all states except UTs Himachal Pradesh, Nagaland, and Sikkim on 10th March a follow up reminder to letter sent on 24th December 2024. Sources say that political currents have influenced why IPS officers become selective for central deputation over the past few months. The trends in central deputation suggest that states that came under political or administrative flash or, for that matter, attempt to engulf bureaucracy directly or indirectly into politico-bureaucratic churning have seen an uptick in officers choosing central deputation compared to not-so-politically or administratively charged states.

While the interplay of power politics and bureaucracy remains one strong reason for central deputation, one more reason is the state's influence. Many officers already in influential posts or enjoy faith in state power corridors are unwilling to serve on central deputation. Surprisingly, this notion is becoming popular not only at the IG level but also at the SP level. A total of 126 SP-level posts are vacant in the Centre, the highest among all other vacancies. One top source said, "It is concerning if young IPS officers are engaging in power games at the initial stages of their career instead of diversifying their career and experience pool" The Ministry of Home Affairs must take its sword out to bridge the efficiency gap in our policing institutions and tighten its grip over IPS officers to optimize working of central establihsments.
