Congress Repackaging Indira Era Strategies For UP Elections?

After Indira Gandhi's era, the Congress party shifted its political trajectory as the surge surrounding the Ram Temple movement gained momentum. Traditional Brahmin supporters progressively aligned with the BJP, while Dalit voters simultaneously re-evaluated their political priorities, source says. Subsequent tactical pivots yielded limited results; even raising Dalit rights and welfare issues around the time of the national census failed to create any significant dent in support for the Congress party, source says. Recognizing these challenges, Rahul Gandhi deemed it strategic to return to the party’s historical core formula. This shift culminated in the removal of Ajay Rai as the Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee (UPCC) president and the appointment of Aradhana Misra "Mona" a prominent Brahmin leader and daughter of senior politician Pramod Tiwari to the top post, source says. To complement this leadership structure, Imran Masood was appointed as Working President to represent minorities, alongside a Dalit leader as the state in-charge, source says.

While this specific leadership combination remains untested on the ground, senior party strategists feel it could revive the party's historic Brahmin-Muslim-Dalit social coalition, source says. Meanwhile, the Other Backward Classes (OBC) vote bank has largely been left for the Samajwadi Party (SP) to consolidate under Akhilesh Yadav ‘s PDA formula (Pichhde, Dalit, Alpsankhyak), source says. If this combined strategy aligns smoothly, the source says the Congress-Samajwadi  Party coalition is likely to pose a formidable challenge to the ruling party in upcoming elections, the source says.
