Jayant Choudhary's Gearing Up For UP Elections?

Jayant Choudhary's Gearing Up For UP Elections?

Following his departure from the Samajwadi Party alliance and subsequent entry into the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) chief Jayant Chaudhary has been actively working to solidify his political standing in western Uttar Pradesh. Sources say he remains in structured dialogue with the senior BJP leadership regarding seat-sharing arrangements for upcoming elections. After multiple rounds of negotiations, a high-level meeting with top central leadership was held to formalize the electoral understanding, the source says.

Under the current arrangement, observers note that the BJP management has been cautious regarding the specific seats demanded by the RLD. A formula has reportedly emerged in which candidates favored by the BJP may contest under the RLD’s official hand-pump symbol, a source says. Analysts suggest that, given the political realities, Chaudhary has accepted this arrangement to ensure his organization's survival and relevance of his organization within the larger coalition framework. Internal surveys indicate that winning traditional strongholds, including the family’s historic bastion of Chhaprauli, independently would pose a steep challenge without consolidated support, the source says.

Chaudhary faces complex social engineering hurdles on the ground. His traditional Jat farmer vote bank has expressed reservations about his frequent shifts in alliances, while Muslim voters, a crucial component of his earlier electoral coalition with the SP, have largely drifted away following his alliance with the BJP, a source says. Given his current Rajya Sabha term running until 2028, and his party's existing footprint of 6 MLAs and 2 Lok Sabha MPs, staying aligned with the ruling party is seen by many as a vital necessity to remain politically viable.

Sources say strategic voices within the BJP have informally discussed a potential merger of the RLD into the party structure. However, senior BJP leaders are not in a rush, feeling that maintaining the RLD as a distinct regional entity offers strategic advantages in West UP. Meanwhile, several RLD leaders are eager to secure key administrative roles in both state and central government setups. In such a scenario, Jayant Chaudhary’s political standing within the central cabinet, where he currently serves as a Minister of State (Independent Charge), remains pivotal. Senior BJP leaders are expected to wait for the outcome of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections before deciding on the long-term political arrangement, the source says.
