Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Rethinking Strategy Ahead of Elections?

Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Rethinking Strategy Ahead of Elections?

Ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, internal dynamics within the Bharatiya Janata Party are becoming increasingly complex in Prayagraj. In the 2022 Assembly elections, Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya suffered an unexpected loss in his home constituency of Sirathu to Samajwadi Party candidate Pallavi Patel. Despite this defeat, Maurya retained his role as Deputy CM, a move widely attributed to the high command in Delhi, which seeks a trusted ally within the state leadership, a source says. As the state approaches the next electoral cycle, Maurya is reportedly hesitant to contest from Sirathu again. Seeking a safer, higher-profile alternative, he has set his sights on the Prayagraj North (City North) constituency. Over recent months, he has noticeably ramped up his ground activity in the region, regularly visiting local functionaries and strengthening his network, a source says.

However, this shift has created friction with the incumbent BJP MLA, Harshvardhan Bajpai. The current legislator carries significant local influence as the son of prominent political figures, Ashok Vajpayee and Dr Rajendra Kumari Vajpayee. Bajpai has built a solid reputation in Prayagraj North, maintaining strong ties with the community and earning respect for his work in the constituency.

A political tug-of-war has reportedly surfaced as Bajpai learned of Maurya’s interest in his seat. Both leaders are now asserting their influence to retain or claim candidacy, leading to visible strain between their respective factions. Demographically, Prayagraj North is a largely urban, educated electorate with a significant concentration of Brahmin and Kayastha voters. Local voters in this constituency have historically evaluated individual candidates' credentials and governance records alongside party loyalty, the source says. While Bajpai currently holds a strong local footing and established goodwill, Maurya faces the challenge of persuading the local party base and voters that shifting his constituency aligns with their interests, the source adds.
